Sign-up procedure
The sign-up sheet is available on the day of the Tournament. The players will sign in. Their sign-in number will be their player number. Players are expected to stay for the entire tournament. The Tournament Leader will inform casual players at 9:45 AM that the pool room is reserved from 9:45 AM to 12:30 PM so Casual Players may complete play by 10:00 AM. If there are vacancies, invite the casual players, if they are residents, to participate in the tournament. Or they may remain to see if tables will be open for casual play. The Tournament Leader, or his representative, will return the billiard balls to the admin desk and inform Kilaga Admin Personnel that there are open tables for casual play. Open tables during a tournament are for use of Lincoln Hills Residents, not Tournament Players.
Tournament Rules
We play by the American Pool Players Association Rules that can be downloaded from www.poolplayers.com. After opening the link, click on Membership. A copy of the APA Rules including any revisions/additions to include individual tournaments, e.g., Challengers, Upstarts, Breakers, etc. are contained in binders on the fireplace mantles in both billiard rooms.
In accordance with APA Rules for 8 Ball, billiard balls are racked with the 8 ball in the center, and the remaining balls randomly racked. The Tournament Leader, or assigned number caller, calls the numbers for the players at each table. Teams lag for the break.
We use the Professional Rule for breaking. If a ball is sunk on the break, the table is still open. The player who breaks is not mandated to take solid or stripe, whichever was sunk. If breaker makes the next shot, that determines who has solids and stripes.
A legal break is when the cue ball strikes the head ball, or either of two balls to the right or left of the head ball and four object balls go to rail or a ball is made. If the breaker does not make a legal break or scratches, the opposing player has a ball-in-hand and will shoot from the kitchen. If time is called and the shooter is in the shooting position at the table, then the shooter is allowed to take one last shot at that point. If the shooter raises up for shot realignment or any reason the game is over, and the shot cannot be taken.
If there are balls still on the table after play has ended, then the player/team with the fewest number of balls on the table wins. If each player/team has the same number of balls, then it is recorded as a tie. The winners of the game should mark the results, both winners and losers, on the score sheet and the losers will rack the balls for the next round. Everyone needs to check the score sheet at times to make sure it is accurate. The losers of the last game played on each table should return the balls to the Activity Desk.
Recognition
At the end of the tournament, the Tournament Leader calculates the tournament winner(s) and takes their photo. An email is sent elected board and results posted on the website to recognize tournament winners.
